Having tended to our beans and followed the conditions set out at the beginning of our experiment we eventually got to a point where we could compare the growth of our plants.
Our seeds planted in moist soils and stored in the dark, cool cupboard had different levels of growth. Pots that were sprayed daily with liquid plant food grew best, followed by those watered daily. However, those that were kept dry also grew at a slower pace and we assumed this was a result of the moist soils being unable to dry in the cupboard.
Our plant stems were white and really tall, and the children think this was because these plants were trying to get to sunlight, much like a seed would do in very deep soil. The children thought these plants would die quickly if they stayed in these conditions much longer.
We had similar results with our seeds stored in warm, bright conditions, although the ones kept dry had the least growth of all. Those sprayed with plant food and water had stems that were much shorter and the plants were green in colour.
Interestingly after this we moved all plant pots to our sunny area and sprayed them with plant food to help the plants survive. Within hours our bean shoots that had white stems started turning green
We learned a lot about growth and how different conditions could help or prevent this. Again great work by all the children.
