Investigating Mass
Primary 4 recently completed an exciting maths investigation into mass, using a range of hands-on activities to deepen their understanding. They began by using non-standard units such as magnets, pebbles, and scissors to balance objects on scales. This engaging challenge helped them recognise the need for a standardised unit of measurement.
Building upon their discoveries, the children explored masses from 1 gram to 1 kilogram, comparing and handling different weights. The children loved the "mass discrimination game," where they attempted to determine the mass of various objects by feel alone. This fun and interactive approach encouraged them to think about weight differences.
The children progressed to reading and interpreting scales and had developed a solid grasp of why standard units, such as grams and kilograms, are important in everyday life.
Well done to everyone for their hard work.
