League Final

18th Jun 2024

Today was a huge day in the sporting calendar, as our girls' team took part in the Cumann na mBunscoil Division 1League Final  in Brewster Park, Enniskillen. Played in excellent conditions, the girls took on a very strong St. Mary's, Teemore side, and despite their best efforts, they they came up short on this occasion.
The game was a tough, physical battle from the moment the ball was thrown in. The St. Ronan's girls were up for the challenge and really tore in to their opponents, who had a number of very tall, strong players. From the outset, the girls tried their best to hold the free scoring St. Mary's forwards. Their efforts in the first half paid rich dividends, as they managed to hold the opponents  to just 3 scores! Beibhinn Mohan and Erin Crowley stuck well to their tight, tackling job and this ensured that no easy scores were conceded. Behind them was our fantastic goalkeeper,  Tiarna Cassidy, who, as usual, was "safe as houses" between the posts. Her handling and foot passing were flawless! On top of this, she pulled off a number of first class saves and this kept the scoreline close. With Cara Johnston, Aoibhinn Markey and Bella Loughran doing their best to cover all the gaps, life was proving tricky for the Teemore forwards. These girls had the additional support of the Rachel Curran, who sacrificed her normal role as a forward in the team to come back and help the defence. As always, she gave 100%!
The St. Ronan's midfield pairing were very industrious during the first half. Emma Armitage got on a lot of ball, making some incisive forward runs. This led to her being fouled on a number of occassions and Emma herself got St. Ronan's opening score from one such free kick. Her midfield  partner for the day, Cadhla Mc Mahon was also in fine form, and got through a mountain  of work, running tirelessly until the final whistle.

Half time score St. Mary's 1  - 2        St. Ronan's   0  -  1

On the restart, St. Ronan's picked up where they had left off! Sadie Mc Elroy and Isla Mc Gorman tried their best to get scores, but to no avail. The breakthrough, however, did eventually come when Emma Armitage  finished to the Teemore net and breathed new life into the St. Ronan's girls! This was the least Emma deserved for her committed performance  on the day! The girls, unfortunately,  could not add to this tally and a second Teemore goal sealed the result. Even the efforts of substitutes Macey Campbell, Molly Gavin and Bethany Mc Donagh were not enough and St. Mary's ran out winners on a scoreline of St. Mary's   2  -  7

St. Ronan's  1  -  2

Despite the defeat, the girls can hold their heads high! They gave everything they could and the whole school is very proud of their efforts!
